Smart Hydration: When to Drink More Water

Smart Hydration: When to Drink More Water

We all know that drinking enough clean, fresh water every day is absolutely vital to our overall health. But, did you know that when you drink water is just as important as how much you drink? Strange but true – there are certain times of the day when drinking more water will give you maximum health benefits.

Let’s take a look at the best times to drink more water, so you can stay hydrated throughout the day and keep your body in balance.

Waking Up

Drink one glass of water first thing in the morning after waking up; before your first meal of the day. This will help to flush out toxins, while helping to kick-start the functioning of your internal organs; most importantly, your liver, which works to process those toxins.

While it’s tempting to reach for a cup of coffee instead, that cuppa joe is a diuretic that will actually make your body lose fluids. The kindest thing you can do for your system is to start the day with a tall glass of water, and save the coffee pick-me-up for later on in the morning.

Hint: Pop a slice of lemon into your water, to alkalise your body and to add a fresh citrusy flavour.

Before a Meal

Drinking a glass of water 30 minutes before you eat a meal will help to moisturise your stomach lining and improve your digestion, while also helping your liver and kidneys to metabolise nutrients. Water also helps you to feel fuller, so you’re less likely to overeat.

Did You Know? Water comprises approximately 73% of your brain, 79% of your muscles and 83% of your blood!

After a Meal

Don’t drink water too soon after eating, as it will actually dilute your digestive juices. Wait around 60 minutes after a meal and then drink another glass, to help with your body’s absorption of nutrients.

At the Supermarket

Often when you find yourself craving a snack, your body is actually signalling thirst and not hunger – a very important fact that few people know about! Be sure to take your reusable water bottle along when you’re shopping for groceries, and when you find yourself feeling peckish, take a swig of water instead. If you shop while you’re dehydrated, you’re more likely to fill up your trolley with more snack foods.

Before a Workout

You’re going to work up a sweat when you exercise, which will drain your body of precious fluid. Drink a glass of water about 30 minutes before exercising, to protect your body against dehydration.

Did You Know? Most adults lose an average of 2.5-3 litres of water per day. This loss increases with hot weather and exercise.

After a Workout

Follow your gym session with a glass of water, instead of a sugary chemical-filled sports drink. This will replenish those lost fluids, and improve your energy levels too.

Before a Bath or Shower

The heat and steam from a bath or shower will typically dehydrate your skin (which is why your fingers and toes start to look “pruney” and wrinkled after some time in the bath). A glass of water will give your body some extra fluid, so you won’t feel too “dried out” after that relaxing soak.

Before Bed

Have a glass of water 60-90 minutes before going to bed – this will be enough to replenish fluids lost while you sleep, but not so much that your bladder wakes you up in the middle of the night.
