Protect your skin with eco-conscious sun care

With the increased warmth outdoors, empower yourself with the right ways to enjoy the sunny weather safely. At FtN, we’re huge advocates for mineral-based sunscreens instead of chemical sunscreens for several reasons.

How do mineral sunscreens differ from chemical ones?
Chemical sunscreen absorbs into the skin, where it converts UV rays into heat and releases it from your body. Mineral-based sunscreen, however, forms a protective layer on the surface of your skin and defends against UVA and UVB rays.

Why do we prefer mineral-based sunscreen?
Mineral-based sunscreen protects both your skin and the environment. Due to the lack of harmful toxins often found in chemical-based sunscreen, it doesn’t have the same potential to harm.

Chemical-based sunscreens can disrupt your endocrine system, which can cause hormone imbalances and thyroid issues. It also significantly threatens our environment, marine life and coral reefs.

Understanding SPF ratings
Sunscreen has various SPF ratings, but do you know what they mean? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and describes how much the sunscreen increases your skin’s natural time limit of withstanding the sun before it starts burning.

Explained simplistically, if your skin can withstand 10 minutes of sun exposure, then SPF 30 would help you take on 30 times more, amounting to 300 minutes.

Sun protection best practices
Enjoying the sunny days outdoors is something you can easily manage by frequently reapplying your sunscreen throughout the day. Remember to attend to kids’ sunscreen needs as well to protect their delicate skin. Finally, you can supplement your protection with hats and umbrellas.
