Super Quinoa, Superfood

Cultivated over 5000 years ago by the Incas this humble grain-like seed is fully deserving of all the attention that it has recently been getting. Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is not a grain; it is actually a seed and related to the spinach family. It is full of phytonutrients, antioxidants, high quality protein and powder and it can even balance your blood sugar. When cooked, quinoa is light, fluffy and slightly crunchy. It is very easy to cook, as like most grains it just needs to be boiled and because of its texture it is very versatile, complimenting a light salad in the summer and adding to a warming soup in winter.

Buts its versatility and flavour are not what has made this grain so popular recently. Rather is it because of the heady cocktail of nutrients it contains. In fact you could say that Quinoa is one of the most complete foods in nature because it contains amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and phytonutrients.

  • Quinoa contains all 9 essential amino acids that are required by the body as building blocks for muscles.
  • Quinoa contains high levels of magnesium which helps to relax your muscles and blood vessels and also helps to control blood pressure.
  • Quinoa is a wonderful way to ensure that you consume valuable fibre that eases elimination and tones your colon.
  • Quinoa is a good source of Manganese and copper that act as antioxidants in your body to get rid of dangerous cancer and disease-causing substances.
Did you Know?
Compared to other grains, quinoa is higher in calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, copper, manganese, and zinc than wheat, barley, or corn.

As a result, studies have shown that in its whole grain form quinoa may be effective in preventing and treating these conditions:

  • Artherosclerosis
  • Breast cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Insulin resistance

Quinoa also has other qualities that attribute to it being labeled a ‘mother grain’:

  • Quinoa acts as a prebiotic that feeds the microflora (good bacteria) in your intestines
  • Quinoa is easily digested for optimal absorption of nutrients
  • Quinoa is gluten-free and safe for those with a gluten intolerance
