Harness the Power of Intention for a Balanced Life

We’ve been focussing a lot lately on ways to achieve more harmony and balance in your daily life and surroundings; from meditation techniques to home décor tips. One common theme that stands out the brightest is the role played by intention. When you’re clear about what you want to achieve and how to do it, a whole world of possibilities open up to you. But what exactly does that mean?

What is Intention?

Intention (n) : A determination to act in a certain way; resolve.

A 1987 an academic article from Harvard University Press describes intention as “a mental state that represents a commitment to carrying out an action or actions in the future. Intention involves mental activities such as planning and forethought.”

Being conscious and clear of your intentions can have a profound impact on your life; but how do you develop (and stick to) those intentions? Here are four simple tips for setting intentions that will work for you.

Tips for Realising the Power of Intention in Your Life

Understanding your Reasons

Before setting an intention, it’s important to understand why you want what you want. If an intention is driven by egoism, guilt or a need for validation, they will only serve to frustrate you even further. Rather focus your time and energy on intentions that come from the heart; from self-love, the willingness to heal, or the desire for more harmony in your life.

Write it Down

Putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) is a simple act that immediately makes the things you are committing to more real. Start keeping an “Intention Journal”, where you write down your goals using positive wording. (“I will”, “I can”, etc.) Journaling helps you to clearly articulate what it is that you want – and it helps you to document your successes as well.

Share and Care

Talk about your intention with a friend or loved one who will not only be supportive of your goals, but will also hold you accountable for putting them into action.

Take Action

Commit to your intentions by following up with actions that will help you achieve them. These actions might include expanding your social circle, being more proactive in your workplace, resolving a conflict with a loved one, or simply taking time out to meditate and clear your mind.

Whatever your intentions and goals may be, we hope they bring you a greater sense of joy, balance and harmony in your day-to-day life.
