Member of the plant family Piperaceae

Black Pepper

Other Name(s):

Piper nigrum; Piperine; BioPerine®

Black Pepper plants are native to Southern India but are grown in tropical regions all over the world. It is a very typical tropical plant and simply won’t grow in places where the winter temperatures drop below 12°C and are very thirsty, requiring 2000 mm of rainfall annually. Thankfully, however, the plants thrive best when provided organic fertilisers like cow manure as opposed to chemical fertilisers.

Antioxidant

Besides the obvious, single ingredient whole and ground Black Pepper seasonings found in food aisles, Black Pepper is also used extensively in health supplements and to a lesser extent it can be found in fragrances, body scrubs, essential oil and bath soaks.

Black Pepper is made from the unripe fruit of the plant. These still green drupes are boiled and subsequently dried. While drying, the black pepper begins to darken in appearance until it becomes characteristically black.

Piperine, the unique compound found in black pepper, has been scientifically proven to enhance the bioavailability of other herbal supplements, such as turmeric.
