Activated Charcoal literally sucks up poisons and gases in your stomach and intestine, such as
- Toxic amines
- Peptotoxins of decomposed foods
- Bacterial toxins
- Nitrogenous and organic wastes
- Carbon dioxide
- Methane
All the above are the product of indigestion, food poisoning or an allergic reaction to the food you have eaten.
These offending substances are adsorbed by the porous surfaces of tiny charcoal particles and escorted through to evacuation of the bowel.
Activated Charcoal is not digested or dissolved by the acids or alkalis of the digestive tract and therefore it is not assimilated into the blood stream, rendering it absolutely non-toxic.
Action and uses
Tummy Ache, Intestinal gas and flatulence: Naturmade’s CharcoCaps ® and CharcoTabs ® are extremely effective at reducing gas and bloating. They also reduce tummy rumbles and cramping caused by toxicity and gas. By eliminating gas in the intestinal tract, they can help alleviate much of the distress associated with it. The principal indication for Naturmade’s CharcoCaps ® and CharcoTabs ® is for the relief of intestinal flatulence and associated symptoms.
Poison antidote: As an emergency antidote to swallowed poisons, activated charcoal is without equal among known and commonly used adsorbents. It is an antidote in practically all poisonings’.
Food Poisoning: Naturmade’s CharcoCaps ® and CharcoTabs ® are for the treatment of poisonings or toxic conditions, which result from eating foods that are tainted or spoilt. Nausea, vomiting, foul tasting eructation (Burping), abdominal cramps, rumbling in the intestines and diarrhoea are some of the symptoms of food poisoning. Our activated charcoal can adsorb the offending substances and arrest symptoms.
Drug overdose or toxicity: Naturmade’s CharcoCaps ® and CharcoTabs ® can adsorb a drug which has been taken mistakenly or overdose. If taken immediately after the drug has been swallowed, it will adsorb enough to prevent some toxic effect.
How to take Activated Charcoal
As mentioned before, activated charcoal is non-toxic, so you cannot overdose. Generally speaking, you only need to take Activated Charcoal whenever symptoms appear.
Suggested intake:
Flatulence and IBS related symptoms: 4-6 tablets/2-4 capsules taken immediately, and then an additional 2 tablets every 6 hours thereafter, or until the symptoms subside. Due to its effectiveness, you may only need the initial dose.
Uncomfortable tummy due to a reaction to something you have eaten: 4-6 tablets/2-4 capsules taken immediately and then an additional 2 tablets every 6 hours thereafter, or until the symptoms subside. Due to its effectiveness, you may only need the initial dose.
Indigestion: 4-6 tablets/2-4 capsules taken immediately and then an additional 2 tablets every 6 hours thereafter, or until the symptoms subside. Due to its effectiveness, you may only need the initial dose.
Hangover: While not a cure for a hangover, taking charcoal after a night, prior to falling asleep and as soon as you wake up, will serve to ‘soak’ up the residue and toxins left over from alcohol consumption. Just like a fatty meal tends to dilute the toxins in your tummy, which makes you feel a lot better, charcoal ‘soaks’ up these toxins, encapsulates them and ejects them from your bowels, leaving you feeling much better and less hung over. 6 tablets/4 capsules prior to retiring and another 6 tablets/4 Capsules upon waking (drink up to 500ml at the same time).
Diarrhoea: Research suggests that it may be useful for diarrhoea. 6-10 tablets/5-8 capsules taken immediately and a further 4-6 tablets/2-4 capsules every few hours or until symptoms subside.
Poisoning: Due to its strong adsorbent qualities, activated charcoal will soak up offending poisons. Once would need large quantities within an hour of ingesting the toxin, so its best that activated charcoal is administered in an emergency facility.
Contraindications:
As mentioned, activated charcoal is not toxic; however one needs to be aware of the following:
- Due to its highly adsorbent properties, any medication you are taking should not be taken an hour prior to or an hour after taking activated charcoal.
- Due to the fact that activated charcoal is not absorbed into your system, the charcoal will be excreted completely, which may darken the colour of your stool. This is nothing to be concerned about and is totally harmless and normal.
- Large quantities of charcoal may cause mild constipation. This will self-correct once you cease taking the product.
