Candelilla shrubs grow wild in the arid semi-deserts of Mexico and Arizona, California, and Texas where they developed a thick waxy cuticle to prevent water loss. It grows well even in poor soils, and has a very low water requirement.

Many balms and salves also use candelilla as a plant-based alternative to beeswax. It’s used extensively in chewing gum products and as a glazing agent on throat lozenges too.
Candelilla Wax was made from the protective layer found on the stems. The whole stems are processed using a mixture of boiling water and an acid. The type of acid used was most commonly sulfuric acid but more sustainable citric acid extraction methods have been in use since 2013.
Wax wraps are taking sustainable kitchens to the next level. Beeswax wraps were some of the first to hit store shelves, but many vegans wish to avoid using these. Brands have developed plastic-free, reusable food wraps using candelilla wax.
