Daucus carota is native to Europe and Southwestern Asia but is now distributed across the planet thanks to its culinary uses. Carrot farming requires very little fertilisation because carrots don’t need much nitrogen but do need to be watered frequently. In 2010, South African production of carrots was close to 140 000 tons.
