I use is as a face and body soap and it doesn't dry out my rather fussy skin (I even used it to wash my hair this week, followed by a citric acid rinse and my hair felt great). The charcoal is grainy though, so the soap is quite rough if you rub it directly on your skin - wouldn't recommend doing it that way for delicate skin. I found it has lasted long and not turned mushy in the shower as I have experienced with other artisan soaps. To clarify for the reviewer who gave this soap a one star rating because of the inclusion of Sodium Hydroxide (also called lye, or caustic soda. The combination of an alkali (Lye -which on its own IS highly caustic) with oil (whichever ones are used in soap) creates a chemical reaction known as 'saponification' which transforms the two components into a totally new compound- soap. A well made bar---as this is!- contains no traces of lye in the final product. Sodium hydroxide - yes looks scary - is an ingredient in all soap claiming to be
atural or hand made. Without it, saponification (the chemical reaction of turning fat, water and lye into a soap) cannot take place. Its like trying to make wine without yeast or sugar.
