And nobody has taken to it quite like Tim Ferriss. You may recognise his name from his best-selling books: <em>The<\/em> 4-<em>Hour<\/em> <em>Workweek, The 4-Hour Body, The 4-Hour Chef, Tools of Titans<\/em> and <em>Tribe of Mentors<\/em> (apparently much can be done in four hours). He was also an early-stage tech investor or advisor in Uber, Facebook, Twitter, Shopify, Duolingo, Alibaba, and 50 other similar companies. My favourite description of him comes from <em>The Observer<\/em> who called him \u2018The Oprah of audio\u2019 due to the influence of his podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/tim.blog\/podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Tim Ferriss Show (opens in a new tab)\">The Tim Ferriss Show<\/a>, which has more than 200 million downloads and been selected for \u2018Best of iTunes\u2019 three years running. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In researching his books, Tim asked hundreds of top performers in various fields about their mornings and discovered that successful people have a consistent routine for starting the day. Gratitude, it turns out, was a common ingredient for many of them. Combining their best elements, Tim came up with his own version. <strong>After trying it for a week I learned a few things:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>It is ultra-calming. If you follow this routine, which takes about an hour, you start your day off in a very positive and Zen state of mind. <\/li><li>The sheer act of a routine is powerful and can lay the foundation for the day\u2019s successes.<\/li><li>Tim\u2019s routine shouldn\u2019t be taken as gospel. Every person will have their own preferences regarding exactly how they\u2019d like to start their day. You should take what works for you and build on that. <\/li><li>\u2018The freedom you so desperately seek can only be found through discipline\u2019. This is a quote from a self-help book I read out of boredom many years ago that has stayed with me and I\u2019ve been thinking about this past week. The idea of a regimented morning offends my hopes of a care-free existence, but a      routine to start your day might be the best way to ensure you sail a little more evenly through life. As Aristotle said, \u2018We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.\u2019<\/li><li>Tim likes to say, \u2018You win the morning, you win the day.\u2019 My first response to that, I\u2019ll be honest, is \u2018Shuddup Tim, you pesky know-it-all\u2019. But he\u2019s an expert in personal development and is probably right in saying that a morning routine is a good first step in reaching your potential. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Ok, so what exactly is his routine? Well, he\nhas three videos on YouTube that describe different routines, but the one I\nfollowed has five pretty simple steps. They are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Put\nyour phone on airplane mode before you go to sleep<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018<\/strong>If you wake up and are barraged by messages you\u2019ll short circuit,\u2019 Tim says. \u2018You want to have a boot-up system of your own rather than waking up to notifications.\u2019 I quite like this, because I think subconsciously you know you won\u2019t be receiving any messages so you can really switch off and relax. Tim also suggests getting out of bed within two minutes of your alarm clock going off. \u2018The way you respond to your alarm is giving the universe a message, and when you hit the snooze button it\u2019s an indication that you don\u2019t value your day as much as you could,\u2019 Tim says. I have to admit, I struggled with this, it is winter after all. But I did best when I put my phone on the other side of the room, forcing myself to stand up when the alarm went off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Make\nyour bed<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>An Indian monk first convinced Tim of the\nmerits of this. You\u2019re accomplishing one thing at the beginning of the day no\nmatter what. And if you work from home it\u2019s important because an external mess\ncreates an internal mess. It doesn\u2019t have to be fancy, it just needs to look\ngood. To be honest, making my bed as soon as I wake up is new to me. But it\u2019s a\ngood positive start to the day and I liked how it gets the ball rolling and\nsends the message that no, you\u2019re not getting back in bed after breakfast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Do 10 &#8211; 15 pushups or sun salutations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>This tip comes from Tony Robbins and is\nintended to prime your nervous system. A cold shower or cold swim in the sea\ndoes a similar thing. \u2018This sets you up physiologically to have a productive\nday,\u2019 Tim says. This might be my favourite aspect of his routine. It\u2019s quick\nand jumpstarts your day. Also, when I do it I feel like Christian Bale in\nBatman Begins and I like that. You kind of jump up afterwards and think, \u2018Epic,\nwhat\u2019s next?! Come at me new day!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Write in a journal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of journaling is to put things that are inside your mind on paper so you can get on with your day. Tim recommends, and uses, two different types of journaling: Morning Pages and the Five-Minute Journal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Morning Pages<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Morning Pages was made popular by Julie\nCameron, who wrote <em>The Artist\u2019s Way<\/em>, and is effectively \u2018vomiting your\nbrain onto the page to trap your monkey mind into print so it doesn\u2019t bother\nyou for the rest of the day.\u2019 The idea is to sit down and write down your\nthoughts in a stream-of-consciousness style. It doesn\u2019t matter what you write,\nyou\u2019re just pushing all your thoughts onto three pages of your journal. Over\nthe first few days, I kept writing about the same ideas and topics. But as the\nweek progressed, I started delving deeper into the recesses of my mind and\ntapping into obscure ideas and thoughts from the previous day. That\u2019s how I\u2019ve\ncome to use it and I find it very satisfying to unload like that and unclog my\nmind. If any good writing or useful thoughts comes out of it, I highlight them\nand move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Five-Minute Journal <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Five-Minute Journal is a guided writing\ntool that asks you to write down three things you\u2019re grateful for, three things\nto do today and three things that would make today great. You\u2019re also supposed\nto come back to it at night and write down three amazing things that happened\ntoday. And three ways you could have made today even better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a very powerful and simple way to focus\nyour mind on the good in your life. Tim says we should \u2018Think of it as a\ntoothbrush for your mind.\u2019 Again with this it took me a few days to get the\nhang of it, but I soon realised that it\u2019s best to go into detail about the\nthings you\u2019re grateful for. Personally, I preferred the Morning Pages more as I\ncould write about whatever I wanted but both had an incredibly calming effect\non my mind. I genuinely felt lighter and more balanced afterwards. It\u2019s such a\npowerful tool, so simple and something I\u2019ll use even more of in the future.\nIt\u2019s like therapy, but way cheaper. Or just use the closest notebook. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Meditate\nfor 10 or 20 minutes<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Meditation is not woowoo,\u2019 Tim says. \u2018It\u2019s training for less emotional reactivity. You learn to observe your thoughts so that when something annoys you during the day you don\u2019t respond in the worst way. It gives you the ability to detach and monitor your negative emotions such as anger, or are able to see it coming earlier. Instead you can short circuit that and choose a better response.\u2019&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guided meditation is best for beginners and\nfree apps like Headspace are good to get started with. Tim recommends\nmeditations from Sam Harris, who has a PHD in neuroscience, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3AME4EjxNMM\">Tara\nBrach\u2019s 2010<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3AME4EjxNMM\"><strong> <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3AME4EjxNMM\">S<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3AME4EjxNMM\">mile\nGuided Meditation<\/a>. I already find journaling very calming so\nfollowing it up with meditating I basically float out of my room and into the\nrest of the day. I found the 20-minute sessions to be a bit long although I do\nrecommend Tara Brach\u2019s smile meditation, she\u2019s great. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BONUS: <\/strong>After these steps, Tim does 20 &#8211; 90 minutes of exercise followed by a cold shower. Only then does he check emails and phone messages. And his favourite tea to start the day? A mix of Pu&#8217;er tea, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/taka-organic-turmeric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"tumeric (opens in a new tab)\">tumeric<\/a> and ginger, and essential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=green+tea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"green tea (opens in a new tab)\">green tea<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lifehacking feels like a very recent, internet-age type of term.
