Being a new parent means facing amazing new challenges, a ton of excitement and joy, a long stretch of sleepless nights and of course \u2013 nappies, nappies and still more nappies! Your baby\u2019s first years of life will be spent wearing diapers, and while the most committed eco-warriors among us stick to 100% cloth nappies, most of us find it a lot more practical to use disposables, at least some of the time. However, not all disposable diapers are created equal \u2013 the ordinary brands you\u2019ll find on supermarket shelves are simply loaded with chemicals, colours and fragrances. Here\u2019s a look at some of the common \u201chidden nasties\u201d cropping up in commercial diaper brands today. Rest assured you\u2019ll find none of these lurking in the nappies sold by Faithful to Nature<\/a>!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Dyes<\/h3>\n

Diapers often include synthetic dyes, to colour the graphics on them or to create wetness indicators. These dyes can trigger skin rashes and irritations \u2013 or even conditions like dermatitis in more extreme conditions.<\/p>\n

Dyes to watch out for:<\/em> Disperse Blue 106, Disperse Blue 124, Disperse Yellow 3, and Disperse Orange 3.<\/p>\n

Perfumes<\/h3>\n

Let\u2019s be honest, we all wish diaper changes were a little less smelly \u2013 but synthetic fragrances in diapers do way more harm than good. Ordinary nappies are often perfumed with citral and other chemicals, which can cause allergic reactions and skin irritations.<\/p>\n

Dioxins<\/h3>\n

Most conventional supermarket brands of nappies have been bleached white, using chlorine. The by-products of this are called dioxins, really nasty toxic chemicals you don\u2019t want anywhere near your baby! Exposure to dioxins can cause allergic skin reactions and immune system impairment; according to the WHO (World Health Organisation), they may even be carcinogenic.<\/p>\n

VOCs<\/h3>\n

Volatile Organic Compounds are chemicals like toluene, xylene and ethylbenzene. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has linked these compounds to eye, nose and throat irritations, as well as respiratory problems.<\/p>\n
