Whether it\u2019s committing to actually using that gym memberships\u00a0we sign up for, promising to call our parents more, or even endeavouring to be less hostile\u00a0when we get behind the wheel \u2013 we all use the new year as a refresh button. New year\u2019s resolutions are often seen as an opportunity to improve yourself. You reflect on\u00a0the life you\u2019ve lived for 365 days to see what you can tweak in order to put your best foot\u00a0forward for the coming 365 days. How about we take that a step further? Why not add a few\u00a0eco-friendly resolutions to your 2019 list? Let\u2019s try change ourselves AND our planet for the\u00a0better this coming year. Are you up for the challenge?<\/p>\n

LESS SINGLE-USE PLASTIC<\/h1>\n

Yup we\u2019ve said it 100 times but we won\u2019t stop until this unnecessary form of consumption is\u00a0no longer a thing.\u00a0Did you know that after cigarette butts, plastic bags are the most littered item in the world\u00a0with almost 4 billion carry bags polluting beaches, rivers, lakes and forests every year? Did\u00a0you know that a plastic bag has the lifespan of roughly 127 years?<\/p>\n

We can reduce the amount of plastic that is weighing our planet down and damaging our\u00a0water sources if we simply reduce our use of single-use plastic.<\/p>\n

And guys, it\u2019s so easy. All it takes is that little consciousness when you step out the door to\u00a0go shopping. Take a shopping bag with you. And if you don\u2019t? Try do without any bag (make\u00a0your shop less or save the big shop for another day). Plastic bags is not only about the\u00a0waste they produce but also about what it takes to make them on a daily basis \u2013 from the\u00a0carbon footprint to the CO emissions. We\u2019re going blue in the face with this messaging, but\u00a0you wouldn\u2019t believe how many good people still don\u2019t make this a policy in life.<\/p>\n

Buy glass water bottles that you can reuse because BPA isn\u2019t leaking from the bottle into\u00a0your water every time you fill up a plastic one.<\/p>\n

Change the subscription of your favourite magazines from printed copy to online edition so\u00a0you\u2019re not unwrapping a plastic sleeve you discard almost immediately.<\/p>\n

Cook from scratch so you don\u2019t have to get a sandwich wrapped in clingfilm from the\u00a0canteen downstairs.<\/p>\n

You might not be able to give it all up right away but starting somewhere counts for\u00a0something.<\/p>\n

SHOP CRUELTY-FREE<\/h1>\n

If you have a pet at home, you\u2019ll appreciate why cosmetic companies testing on animals is\u00a0cruel. You shouldn\u2019t have to subject bunnies to pain and suffering if you are confident the\u00a0ingredients in your products aren\u2019t harmful to humans, and there are many cosmetic\u00a0companies who stand by their products. As well as what is in season that\u00a0time of year. There is the added benefit that the less time spent getting your food from the\u00a0farm to the table means you get to enjoy food with more nutrients. As well as your body\u00a0being able to absorb the nutrients from different foods at different times of the year. A varied\u00a0and exploratory diet will grow your body\u2019s nutrient intake and overall strength.<\/p>\n

Buying local also improves the local economy, as the chain of income remains in your\u00a0community as opposed to going to a bigger food conglomerate.<\/p>\n

Visit your nearest farmers market for fresh produce, or even make use of the grocer around\u00a0the corner.<\/p>\n

WALK, BIKE OR CARPOOL<\/h1>\n

The daily commute to and from work is a great source of frustration for many people.\u00a0Carpooling is a great way to make friends and meet people. If you can\u2019t find interested\u00a0people at your place of work, there are apps like CarTrip<\/a> that can help you find people who\u00a0work in the same area that you can travel with.<\/p>\n

The toxicity of petrol contributes to air pollution, acid rain amounts other illnesses that affect\u00a0the human body. Less cars on the road means less petrol poisoning the earth.<\/p>\n

GROW IT AT HOME<\/h1>\n

We all know how rewarding it is to work hard at something and see it come to fruition, so to\u00a0speak. Gardening offers that feeling of accomplishment and pride.
