When seated at home with a flickering flame from a homemade beeswax candle cradled in one of our ocean\u2019s collectible treasures, that\u2019s when life reaches new balmy eco heights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how to make these <\/span><b>ridiculously easy DIY seashell candles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, plus a handful of other tips and tricks for general eco candle making.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>WHAT YOU\u2019LL NEED:<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/simply-bee-pure-beeswax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beeswax chunks<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">String or twine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/body\/aromatherapy\/essential-oils\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essential oils<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (I went with SOIL\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/body\/aromatherapy\/essential-oils\/soil-grapefruit-essential-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grapefruit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/body\/aromatherapy\/essential-oils\/soil-lemongrass-essential-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lemongrass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for spring freshness and bug deterrent)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gathered seashells from your beach adventures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pot<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass jar (Console or Pyrex are hot water suitable)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wooden chopstick<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30828 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1004\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-2.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-2-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-2-768x514.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-2-1024x685.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-2-1080x723.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-2-610x408.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>EASY DIY STEPS<\/b><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set the pot on the stove with water in it and bring to the boil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place the glass container in the water and pop the hard beeswax blocks into the container.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the water is boiling turn the heat down lower so as to minimize the jar or bowl from moving about too much.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the wax is all liquid, dip a length of twine (30cm should be enough, but try to gauge based on how many candles you\u2019re making) into the hot wax and lay it out on a tray in an elongated snake to cool. This should only take a few minutes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this is setting, get your chosen essential oils and add about 10-15 drops into the melted beeswax. Stir with a wooden chopstick.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then cut the newly dipped wick into 3-4 cm lengths to use for the individual seashell candles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set your shells out on a tray and pour a <\/span><b>small amount of wax <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into the bottom of each candle. If you find it hard to pour, use the wooden chopstick to drop just a bit into each shell. This will act like a secure for the wicks in a minute. Leave this to set for 2 minutes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then pop your cut wicks into the middle of each one (the wax will have settled in the deepest part of the shell, which is where you want the wick so it burns the longest). Leave to set completely for another 5 minutes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now pour your liquid beeswax into each shell slowly until the level is close to the rim.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leave to harden for a few hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b><br \/>\nWHY I LOVE USING BEESWAX FOR THESE CANDLES<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It burns much slower so our candles last longer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No toxic fumes around food and romancing with wine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower burning temp makes the wax safer in case of spillage and also the shells can take the heated wax and don\u2019t break<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30829 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-1-1.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-1-1-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-1-1-768x491.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-1-1-1024x655.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-1-1-1080x690.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-1-1-610x390.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON THE SHELLS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I feel it goes without saying, but then it\u2019s always worth stressing \u2013 only use shells you find on your beach walks or adventures that have already been vacated by the living creatures who once used them as a home.<br \/>\n<\/span>Buying fancy, large and rare shells from boutique tourist shops is also not a good idea because you might be unknowingly supporting an industry that isn\u2019t ensuring the sustainability of the species they\u2019re harvesting from the sea purely for commercial tourist purposes.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These seashell candles were all made from shells found on Hout Bay, Brandfontein &amp; Umhlanga beach.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30830 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-Chalkboard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"983\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-Chalkboard.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-Chalkboard-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-Chalkboard-768x503.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-Chalkboard-1024x671.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-Chalkboard-1080x708.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-Chalkboard-610x400.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>GENERAL CANDLE MAKING TIPS AND TRICKS<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Containers you want to repurpose like broken mugs and teacups make for lovely vintage candles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a wooden wash peg horizontally and balanced on the rim of the container to pinch the wick so it stays in the center of whatever vessel you\u2019re pouring into.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No pegs? Cut the top of your egg carton in strips and poke a little hole through it. Wiggle the wick through this so it can balance over the top rim of your container or shell while suspending the wick below.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be impatient! Let your candles set fully before trying to remove your cardboard strip for the next batch of candles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re making pillar candles which you want to remove from the container \u2013 remember it must be wider at the top of the container (the base of your candle) or it won\u2019t come out<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30831 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"963\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-3.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-3-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-3-768x493.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-3-1024x657.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-3-1080x693.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Easy-DIY-Seashell-Candles-3-610x392.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/b><\/h2>\n<h2>AN UNLIKELY ECO TIP ON USING NON-BEESWAX CANDLES<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would love all my candles in my home to be beeswax eco candles, but on occasion I get gifted a regular candle. When those burn down, it\u2019s far kinder to the environment to melt that wax down, pour it into a container and put a new wick in it, than just tossing the rest away. It won\u2019t biodegrade anywhere and at least this way you\u2019re using it and all the resources that went into making the whole of it, up in its entirety. Burn it outdoors in hurricane lamps if you\u2019re worried about fumes. It\u2019s the lesser of two evils in my book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s hoping you find much enjoyment making these over the warmer months and enjoying them over pleasant evening picnics.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: Shells are not the best conductors of heat and get pretty hot to the touch, be sure to handle gently.
