When I sat down with Mike Morritt-Smith to find out more about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilovecoffeeshop.co.za\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Love Coffee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, their dedication to providing employment for deaf black youth and eco-friendly coffee packaging solutions, I was pretty convinced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read my interview with Mike below and let us know what you thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h4><b> Can you tell me a bit about the concept behind I Love Coffee?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re a social enterprise, targeting unemployed deaf black youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> How do you find new employees?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our staff members tend to refer friends to us, so that is one of the main ways we find new employees. But, we would also put out word \u2013 or perhaps, rather the sign &#8211; on social media that we are in need of new staff. We\u2019ve also worked with the National Institute for the Deaf (NID).<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> Where are you guys based? And are you planning any expansions any time soon?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, we have two coffee stations in the Publicis Machine offices in Harrington Street, Cape Town. One on the fourth floor and one on the fifth floor. We also supply a private corporate kitchen service, offering lunch and snacks. So, we have deaf baristas who make coffee and our kitchen staff \u2013 our head chef and his assistants \u2013 are all deaf as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re in the process of opening a new branch in 78 Strand Street and also our first outlet in Johannesburg at the Nelson Mandela Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> So, if I want to order a coffee from one of the deaf baristas, how should I go about it?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, we run a video throughout the day, explaining the signs to use for the most common coffee orders \u2013 Americano, flat white, cortado and so forth. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilovecoffeeshop.co.za\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video is also available on the website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(or down below) for people to familiarise themselves with before visiting if they\u2019d want to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"How to order a coffee in South African Sign Language\" width=\"1060\" height=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xlQhDjH6smo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> Is there anything like this elsewhere in the world?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deafcancoffee.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in Jamaica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that we\u2019ve been in contact with. But other than that we haven\u2019t found anyone working specifically with deaf people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many other countries in the world offer better support to people with disabilities than we do in South Africa. So, it\u2019s easier for them to get jobs in various sectors. It\u2019s not like this here, so that\u2019s why we have decided on the deaf black youth as our target market.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> I\u2019m sure having a job does a world of good for the confidence of the deaf people you employ. Have you noticed this?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For sure! Once they\u2019ve been introduced to this and realise that they can actually participate, there\u2019s an absolute change in their lives.<br \/>\n<\/span>I mean their education opportunities are seriously limited \u2013 it stops at a very young age.<br \/>\nThey are able to earn their own keep, use public transport, contribute to society, and this makes them very happy. Especially those who have come out of a home environment where they have been kept in cotton wool. They arrive here and won\u2019t even look out from behind the coffee machine, but within three or four months, they realise they can and then the true aspirations come out in their souls.<br \/>\nSince we started two years ago, we\u2019ve even had a number of employees realise these dreams. One has moved on to become a chef in Worcester, another is a qualified sign language teacher. While it\u2019s sad to lose them, it\u2019s incredible to see them going out into the world confidently and doing their own thing.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> How many people do you currently employ?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We currently have nine full-time employees and are in the process of training a further 14. With the addition of our new outlet in Joburg, we\u2019re anticipating to reach about 55 \u2013 60 full-time employees in the next two to three years.<br \/>\n<\/span>This is incredible to see, especially in the light of the fact that we started with only three full-time employees two years ago.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30520 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/I-lLove-Coffee-interview.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/I-lLove-Coffee-interview.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/I-lLove-Coffee-interview-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/I-lLove-Coffee-interview-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/I-lLove-Coffee-interview-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/I-lLove-Coffee-interview-1080x720.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/I-lLove-Coffee-interview-610x407.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> I also understand that <\/b><b><i>I Love Coffee<\/i><\/b><b> has its own line of 99.9% compostable c<\/b><b>offee pods. Can you tell me a bit more about that?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pods are moulded in South Africa from pellets imported from Germany. The pellets ar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e bio material. So, the pellets arrive, we mould it, fill it and then cap it with an aluminium foil cap. This is the %<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that is not compostable.<br \/>\n<\/span>Everything else is a natural plant-based product. In ideal conditions, in a waste environment, it\u2019s a six-week cycle to turn back into compost. It\u2019s a little bit longer in most South African environments, however, because we\u2019re a lot dryer. But in the compost\/dump environment, it really hits those six weeks quite successfully, as the temperature and moisture content is quite high. So, it does best in your compost (as opposed to in the ground) where you\u2019ve got decaying material and all of that. The colourant we use, is a soy colourant, so it\u2019s also plant-based and compostable.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30521 size-full alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-08-15-at-11.44.07-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-08-15-at-11.44.07-1.jpeg 341w, https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-08-15-at-11.44.07-1-213x300.jpeg 213w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> Where can people get hold of the pods?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We package them ourselves and sell them at our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilovecoffeeshop.co.za\/pages\/contact-us#locations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coffee shop<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> Can you tell us a bit about the coffee inside?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coffee is a blend sourced from Africa, Asia and also South- and Central America. It is then artisanally roasted here in South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"11\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> And I hear it\u2019s not only the pods that are eco-friendly?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, we would like to be as earth-friendly as possible, so our takeaway cups and their lids are also compostable. We\u2019ve also cut out straws totally. Our next big move is to recycle coffee.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"12\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> Oh wow, really? Can you tell a bit more about what recycling coffee would entail?<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it would be so labour-intensive, it\u2019s a big employment opportunity for us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, there are actually a number of items one can make with recycled coffee grounds. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Fertiliser<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Beauty products<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Even<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2015\/05\/22\/kaffeeform-recycled-ground-coffee-waste-cup-julian-lechner\/\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moulding it into reusable cups<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"13\">\n<li>\n<h4><b> And I\u2019m sure once you start with this, you\u2019re going to find endless opportunities for growth.<\/b><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. In fact, for us, the big challenge right now is to control our growth. Now that our concept is becoming more widely known, there are a lot of opportunities out there.
