{"id":29577,"date":"2018-06-15T15:27:46","date_gmt":"2018-06-15T13:27:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/?p=29577"},"modified":"2020-06-26T13:55:56","modified_gmt":"2020-06-26T11:55:56","slug":"plastic-free-lifestyle-checklist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/blog\/plastic-free-lifestyle-checklist\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Plastic-Free Lifestyle Checklist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Currently approximately 300 million tons of plastic are produced each year to make mostly single-use plastic products such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/supa-set-of-5-reusable-bags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bags<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=straws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">straws<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=water+bottle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bottles<\/a> and packaging. Only nine percent of these plastics end up being recycled, most cannot be recycled at all. The majority of this ends up in landfills, in the ocean heading towards the Great Pacific garbage patch (which is now three times the size of France) or in the natural environment. This plastic breaks up exceptionally slowly into smaller and smaller fragments, leaching toxic chemicals into the soil and water. We are all aware of the repercussions this has for our wildlife, vegetation, soil and air as images of turtles with straws lodged in their nostrils and dead birds with plastic-filled bellies populate our screens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest, the mantra \u2018<em>Reduce, Refuse, Reuse, Rot, Recycle<\/em>\u2019 is catchy, it\u2019s definitely helpful, but we are at the stage where more needs to be done \u2013 by us.&nbsp; Our world is one where every piece of plastic ever made is still here. Recycling is undoubtedly no substitute to reducing what is bought in the first place. We need to be moving towards waste-free living, and in order to begin this way of life, we need to stop plastic before it comes into our homes. Change the demand and inevitably you will change the supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there is good news: you can make a difference and inspire others to live similarly. &nbsp;Changing to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithful-to-nature.co.za\/lifestyle\/waste-less\/100-plastic-free\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plastic-free lifestyle<\/a> is not as daunting as it may seem. Some of the easiest ways you can start this transition are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Refusing single use plastic bags and cutlery<\/li><li>Drinking from a reusable water bottle<\/li><li>Carrying a reusable coffee cup with you<\/li><li>Participating in beach or river clean-ups<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an action checklist of ways to move away from a plastic dependency and towards a cleaner, more sustainable and fulfilling lifestyle.
