She lives in Paternoster, South Africa and has been passionately committed to living a zero waste lifestyle since July 2016. She&#8217;s alread raked up over 1300 followers on her Instagram account <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/journeytozero_\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Journeytozero_\u00a0<\/a>. We decided to touch base with her, to find out what inspires her and what her tips are to get others motivated on going zero waste.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>1. What inspired your Zero waste journey?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I\u2019ve always fancied myself as a bit of a greenie.\u00a0\u00a0When I started seeing social media posts about people who only produce a mason jar\u2019s worths of trash in a year, I was seriously intrigued. Once I started researching the issue, it seemed ridiculous to not make some changes myself. \u00a0And watching lots of documentaries, of course.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>2. What has been the most challenging part of this journey?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Getting the rest of my family fully on board. \u00a0I sometimes have to sneak homemade sparkling water into restaurants or make tortillas from scratch to avoid the plastic and the palm oil.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>3.\u00a0What has been the most rewarding part of this journey?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Seeing how much waste we avoid every day just by making simple swaps or refusing certain items. We avoid dozens of plastic bags and containers everytime we go shopping, And that really adds up after a few months.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>4.\u00a0When you are not saving the world, what is your favourite way to spend your time?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Cooking, baking, sewing, embroidery, tapestry weaving, just the standard hobbies of an old lady.\u00a0\u00a0And doing beach cleanups. lots and lots of beach cleanups<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why refuse plastic<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Some food for thought to start you on your plastic-free journey\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery piece of plastic ever made still exists somewhere.\u201d Isn&#8217;t that a scary thought? \u00a0<\/span>How crazy is it that we&#8217;ve chosen an \u2018immortal\u2019 material to make single-use items from? \u00a0Your plastic toothbrush from when you were little is still out there, stubbornly existing. Your throw-away plastic straw will outlive you. Think of this next time you reach for that plastic fork.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plastic doesn\u2019t biodegrade\u2019, it photodegrades, which means it just breaks down into smaller and smaller particles, which release toxic chemicals into the environment.<\/li>\n<li>Vast amounts of plastic end up in the ocean where it is killing sea life. There are parts of the ocean (eg. the Great Pacific garbage patch) that consist of a soup of micro-plastics which cannot be cleaned up.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastics are also harmful to our health. Many of them have not ever been tested for safety,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and others have been proven harmful.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastic is made from non-renewable resources such as crude oil. Make other people watch these too.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow inspirational Zero Waste people on Instagram, YouTube, blogs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Beware of greenwashing and mis-information, such as some compostable packaging items which need to be taken to an industrial composting facility in order to break down. Read labels!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trash Audit<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay attention to everything you throw away and see if there\u2019s a reusable\/plastic free option or if you could do without.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Do the same with your recycling. Generally, recycling should be your last option. This is particularly true for plastics which can only be \u2018downcycled\u2019, not \u2018recycled\u2019 like glass.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Composting<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Compost your food scraps and paper\/compostables. These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reusable (fabric) shopping and produce bags. \u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would you want flimsy single-use bags for your shopping when you can have sturdy reusable bags? The turtles also thank you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Tip* Always make sure you fold them back up and put them where you&#8217;ll remember them for next time.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And don&#8217;t forget those evil little barrier bags that lurk around every corner of the produce section, Bring your own lightweight drawstring bags for weighing your produce or just #skipthebag altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also use reusable bags for buying nuts, seeds etc. from the bulk section (think Food Lovers\u2019 Market).<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; text-align: inherit;\">Reusable coffee cup<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I use a glass \u201cKeepcup&#8221; and I can highly recommend it. \u00a0I use it for coffee, smoothies and, \u00a0occasionally, leftovers. Some places even give you a discount for bringing your own cup. If you\u2019re not keen on drinking tap water, then filter your own water. I like using a Stefani terracotta filter or a charcoal stick such as Kuro-B\u014d.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; text-align: inherit;\">Container(s) of sorts for take-aways or leftovers<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I make sure to pack enough reusable containers for all our take-aways and for our food when we go to markets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Zero Waste nut of the family, I carry a big sturdy bag with me to markets, filled with glass and bamboo containers (with lids), stainless steel cups, reusable coffee cups, cutlery, napkins, salt, sugar, you name it.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure to confidently ask for your meal in your own container. It helps if its completely spotless. Explain your reasoning if they seem confused.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; text-align: inherit;\">Fabric napkin<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be used instead of paper serviettes, or again for leftovers, or for take-away things such as croissants. Also good as an alternative to bubble-wrap when buying something breakable.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; text-align: inherit;\">Utensils<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I typically have a fork and a teaspoon with me. You can use it for stirring takeaway coffee if the coffee shop only supplies disposable stirrers. At a market, it\u2019s also quite nice to eat with real utensils and fabric napkins instead of flimsy plastic cutlery and a tiny paper napkins.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; text-align: inherit;\">Reusable straws<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass, stainless steel and bamboo.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have a little pouch full of reusable straws at the ready so I can #skipthestraw\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could obviously just drink your drink without a straw but I like to\u00a0use a reusable version for things such as smoothies and milkshakes. I carry spares for the rest of my family too.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; text-align: inherit;\">Mason Jar(s).<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I like to keep a jar with me, just in case. \u00a0I occasionally take everyone\u2019s food scraps home to compost, but that\u2019s just weird, so we won\u2019t talk about that.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 658px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-version=\"7\">\n<div style=\"padding: 8px;\">\n<div style=\"background: #F8F8F8; line-height: 0; margin-top: 40px; padding: 50.87962962962963% 0; text-align: center; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #c9c8cd; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 0; margin-top: 8px; overflow: hidden; padding: 8px 0 7px; text-align: center; text-overflow: ellipsis; white-space: nowrap;\"><a style=\"color: #c9c8cd; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BXA2rs6DvoY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A post shared by Journey To Zero (@journeytozero_)<\/a> on <time style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 17px;\" datetime=\"2017-07-26T14:36:08+00:00\">Jul 26, 2017 at 7:36am PDT<\/time><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async defer src=\"\/\/platform.instagram.com\/en_US\/embeds.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Zero Waste Swops in the Bathroom \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose natural &amp; homemade products over conventional brands.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Plastic toothbrush<\/strong>\u2014 swap for a bamboo toothbrush <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Body wash<\/strong>\u2014 swap for solid soap<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Plastic bottles of shampoo\/conditioner<\/strong> \u2014 swap for solid shampoo\/conditioner bars<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deodorant<\/strong> \u2014 swap for homemade, glass bottles, solid deodorant bars, limes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disposable razors\/blades<\/strong> \u2014 swap for a safety razor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disposable cotton rounds\/face wipes<\/strong>\u2014 swap for fabric cotton rounds\/washcloth<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plastic loofah<\/strong>s \u2014 swap for natural fibre washcloths\/wooden brush with compostable bristles<\/li>\n<li><strong>Earbuds with plastic sticks<\/strong> \u2014 swap for compostable ones with wooden\/cardboard sticks (Remember to actually compost your compostables!)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exfoliants with microbeads<\/strong> \u2014 swap for natural exfoliants such as salt, sugar, etc. My go-to is baking soda\/bicarb.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Zero Waste options in the Kitchen\/ Home<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Synthetic sponges<\/strong> \u2014 swap for cotton washcloths and wooden brushes with compostable heads\/bristles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cling wrap<\/strong> \u2014 swap for beeswax wraps, tea towels, lids, or do without.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Baking paper<\/strong> is generally compostable (make sure to check), but if not \u2014 swap for a silicone baking sheet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ziplockies<\/strong> \u2014 swap for jars, food containers (reuse!) etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paper serviettes<\/strong> \u2014 swap for fabric napkins. Apart from being reusable, they look hella fancy compared to their ugly paper cousins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tea bags<\/strong> \u2014 swap for loose-leaf tea. Many teabags actually contain plastic to make them stronger. Bonus points if you can buy the tea in your own container.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Toxic\/artificial cleaning products packaged in plastic<\/strong> \u2014 swap for homemade, natural cleaners such as plain vinegar, citrus vinegar (place your citrus peels in white vinegar for a few weeks) and bicarb. Look for natural products (but beware of greenwashing. Do your research!) \u00a0Opt for ones packaged in cardboard if possible, or buy bulk cleaning products in your own containers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Buy things to last<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Choose secondhand when possible. So many resources go into making new products.<\/li>\n<li>Buy the best products you can afford.<\/li>\n<li>Go for sturdy, natural materials rather than breakable plastic ones.<\/li>\n<li>The clothing\/textile industry is incredibly wasteful. Look for secondhand \/vintage clothing if \u00a0you can.<\/li>\n<li>I<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f second hand is not an option\/your jam, try and buy locally made good-quality pieces that will last. Try to avoid synthetic fabrics as they shed microfibers into the water which end up in the ocean, as well as being made from petrochemicals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Avoid products with \u201cplanned obsolescence\u201d. Think smartphones etc. This is a hard one, I admit. The usual heads come in a plastic container with a plastic film and they&#8217;re all wrapped in more plastic and then in a box ? the heads that I ordered came in a tiny plastic box with a plastic film but the next ones I order I&#8217;ll get in a cardboard box \u267b\ufe0f and the actual razor will last me a lifetime ?
