Like the name suggests, heirloom seeds are those seeds that have been handed down from generation to generation of gardeners. These seeds are open-pollinated (ie. naturally pollinated), with no genetic modification. Heirloom seeds are typically at least 40 to 50 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s a look at the key benefits gardeners will reap when they choose to sow heirloom seeds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sustainability: <\/strong>Once you have harvested your first crop of heirloom vegetables, you can preserve some seeds from the crop and plant them again next year. That means there’s no need to buy more seeds year after year – a saving that really adds up! Heirloom seeds stay fertile year after year (after year after year) and are the obvious choice for any gardener looking to maintain a truly self-sufficient veggie patch.
