Summer is fast approaching – endless summer days, fun in the sun\u2026 and yes, our insect friends the mozzies will be back. Mosquitos and other little critters that come with the great outdoors, and often indoors too, need some deterring as you just taste so good to them they can\u2019t help it!<\/p>\n

Commercial repellents often contain some questionable toxic ingredients such as DEET that can be absorbed into your bloodstream, that are not recommended for use on children, especially in higher concentrations.<\/p>\n

Homemade repellents can be very effective made with essential oils such as:<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2022 citronella<\/a>
\n\u2022 eucaplytus<\/a>
\n\u2022 lemon<\/a>
\n\u2022 lemongrass<\/a>
\n\u2022 rose geranium<\/a>
\n\u2022 lavender<\/a>
\n\u2022 clove<\/a>
\n\u2022 peppermint<\/a>
\n\u2022 lemongrass<\/a>
\n\u2022 tea tree<\/a>
\n\u2022 rosemary<\/a><\/p>\n

These oils all have a pleasant clean smell that will soon remind you of summer days and fun.<\/p>\n

Some Bug Repelling Recipes<\/h2>\n

You will need a spray bottle for your mosquito repellent to make it easy to spritz on, an 8 oz bottle works well.<\/p>\n

Ingredients<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Choose from lemon<\/a>, citronella<\/a>, tea tree<\/a>, rosemary<\/a>, or eucalyptus <\/a>essential oils
\n\u2022 Witch hazel
\n\u2022 Distilled or boiled Water
\n\u2022 \u00bd teaspoon vegetable glycerin (optional)<\/p>\n

How to<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Half fill a spray bottle with distilled or purified water
\n\u2022 Fill almost to the top by adding witch hazel
\n\u2022 Add 1\/2 tsp vegetable glycerin if using
\n\u2022 Add 30-50 drops of bug repellent essential oils – put together a bouquet you like
\n\u2022 Give it a shake<\/p>\n

Kiddie\u2019s recipe<\/h2>\n

Lemon and eucalyptus can be a bit too strong for sensitive kiddie\u2019s skins, so here\u2019s a lighter version:<\/p>\n

Ingredients<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Distilled or purified water
\n\u2022 Witch hazel
\n\u2022 Peppermint<\/a>, clove<\/a>, lavender<\/a>, citronella <\/a>or lemongrass <\/a>essential oil<\/p>\n

How to<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Mix \u00bd pure water with \u00bd witch hazel in your bottle, leaving some space at the top
\n\u2022 Add 15 drops of your chosen oil and shake<\/p>\n

Super Duper Strong Repellent<\/h2>\n

The four thieves<\/em> recipe is based on a legend that there were four thieves during the plague who used this combo to survive while fleecing the unfortunate plague victims! For this recipe you’ll need dried herbs.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Apple cider vinegar<\/a>
\n\u2022 1 tbsp. sage
\n\u2022 1 tbsp. lavender
\n\u2022 1 tbsp. rosemary
\n\u2022 1 tbsp. thyme
\n\u2022 1 tbsp. mint<\/p>\n

Add the herbs along with the apple cider vinegar to a mason jar and close. Put on a sunny windowsill for 2 to 4 weeks. Strain out the herbs and transfer into a spray bottle. Please be aware this is a strong mixture \u2013 don\u2019t get near your eyes and not for those with very sensitive skin! Best for arms and legs.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Eating a clove of garlic makes your blood unpalatable for these critters
\n\u2022 Wear long sleeve tops and long pants in the morning and evenings when you are outdoors in prime mozzie country
\n\u2022 Check your outdoors at home for stagnant water where mozzies may be breeding
\n\u2022 Use oil burners<\/a> to burn insect repelling essential oils, it also smells great, (especially citronella) and disinfects the air
\n\u2022 Burn citronella oil torches in your garden
\n\u2022 You can add a few drops of citronella oil to a neutrally scented natural cream \u2013 great for sensitive kiddie skin
\n\u2022 Plant mosquito repelling plants such as citronella grass, catnip, rosemary, lavender and marigolds in your garden and outside your windows
\n\u2022 Rub fresh lavender on your skin<\/p>\n
