The Sapindus Mukorossi tree, also known as the Soap nut tree grows in the Himalayan Mountain Ranges. The tree takes nine years to mature and then drops its berries naturally for 90 years. The fruit is wild-harvested, the inner seed is removed and the shell is then dried in the sun, naturally, without using any chemicals. The remaining dried shell is what we know and love as the soap nut.
How do soap nuts work?
Simply place a few soap nuts (3-6) into the small wash bag provided and place it in the machine with your washing. The saponins in the shell of the Soap nut act as a natural surfactant in the water – freeing dirt, grime and soil from laundry. When the laundry is rinsed, the saponins and the dirt are washed away without harming the environment. You can even use the grey water in your garden. Soap nuts will leave your nappies clean and fresh without the need to add any chemical fabric softeners or conditioners.
One wash bag of soap nuts can be used to wash approximately 4 to 5 loads of laundry for washing at temperatures of 30 - 60 degrees celcius, and for 2 - 3 loads at higher temperatures. Based on this, one 500 gram bag of soap nuts will wash approximately 90 - 100 loads of laundry. Talk about economical - that’s a lot of loads of laundry! And, even though one 500 gram package will last you months longer than normal detergent, there’s no need to worry about storage. Soap nuts are easy to store. They just need to be stored in a relatively dry, room temperature environment and should be out of direct sunlight. If you are in a very moist environment use of an airtight container may be helpful. Nothing special needs to be done by the average user for short-term storage (less than a year).
Other useful info
Soap nuts work in hot and cold water washes. The saponin in soap nuts releases quickly into hot water, and more slowly in cold water. When washing in hot water you only need the equivalent of three whole soap nuts per load. They’ll release all of their saponin in about one wash. When washing with cold water, up to 5 nuts and reuse them up to 6 times. Alternatively, pre-soak your cotton sack containing soap nuts in a little hot water to release the saponin. After a couple minutes of soaking, add the mixture to the cold-water wash.
There is also no need to remove the soap nuts from the rinse cycle. There’s no soapy residue to rinse away! The little bit of saponin left in the rinse adds softness and body to your nappies and clothes.

Best laundry detergent ever!

I bought this after reading many raves about it. Tried it, and I must say clothes smell CLEAN (I never really know what clean smells like, but you will know after you used this!) and whats even better, clothes are super soft! I love it so much, now Ive found a product that I can use on familys clothing without having to separate it with babys. The water from the washing machine gets recycled into the lawn. Nothing is wasted. I am really happy with this buy rather than buying washing powder+softener at the stores (expensive and fragrance is often too strong for babys liking). This is economical, effective and environment -friendly. I am recommending it to all my friends and family!

Great product. Really works , clean , fresh and soft laundry. Washing water we use to water our garden and it is thriving. Love the idea of adding 10 drops essential oil like lavendar to the little bag before the wash , great for linen. I Will definately buy again....i
Takes some getting used to

Not a fan of the smell, but the soapnuts are effective at gentle cleaning.
It does work!

The soap nuts does work, but not so much on heavy soiled items and whites. I LOVE that it makes clothes soft without using a softner. Saves money using these instead of detergent and softner. Will definitely use this for normal loads and wash my whites with something else.
Will be buying again (and again!)

Such a good price for environmentally friendly laundry. They work a treat on my babys nappy. The nappies come out still a little stained but thats nothing the sun can sort out! The nappies are much softer than when I was using conventional detergent, without giving any negative effect on their absorbancy.
A nutty idea but works!

Ive been using soap nuts exclusively for clothing and my babies cloth nappies for over 6 months now and I have no regrets. They don have any fragrances, so clothes don smell at all. I get as good a results as I did with Omo but this is better for our home, baby and the environment - not to mention our pocket!! Way cheaper than washing powder. The only downside is that you need to track the washes to know when to change nuts. But there are various ways to know when they are done - so its really not hard! Try them!
Happy with the nuts

I am happy with how clean our clothes come out with the nuts. It is hard to tell when they are finished but I keep with the recommended washes per bag.
