Did you Know?
A large amount of agrochemicals are used for the production of cotton. In fact cotton production uses a larger amount of chemicals per hectare than any other crop. The processing of cotton thus has large effects on the environment. The chemicals used in the processing end up in the environment and pollute the air and surface waters. Consumers also experience the effects of the many chemicals used in the production of cotton as these chemicals still reside in cotton clothing or applicators and can cause irritated skin.
Organic agriculture on the other hand uses methods that are ecological, economical, and socially sustainable. The use of agrochemicals and artificial fertilizers are prohibited as are the use of insecticides. Instead, crop rotation is used as are natural enemies to suppress harmful insects. The production of organic cotton is not necessarily more expensive than the production of conventional cotton and there is no pollution or overproduction. Organic Bo Weevil produces organic cotton in Turkey and in Uganda.
*The cotton is produced according to the European regulation for organic agriculture (2092/91)
